The same hotel can cost very different amounts depending on where and how you book, and a "central" location can still mean a long walk with luggage. This is the checklist I use every time I book a place in Seoul.
1. Compare the final total, not the first price
The first price you see often leaves out taxes and service fees. Compare the amount on the last screen before payment, across two or three booking sites, for the same room type and the same cancellation terms.
2. Check the free cancellation deadline
"Free cancellation" usually ends a few days before check-in at a specific time. Check whether that time is shown in Korea time (KST, UTC+9) or your own time zone.
3. Measure the walk to the subway exit
Seoul subway stations are large and have many numbered exits. Look up the walking time from the hotel to the nearest exit, not just the station name. In Korea, Naver Map and Kakao Map give much better walking directions than Google Maps, so install one of them before you book.
4. Look for an airport bus stop nearby
If you arrive at Incheon with big bags, a hotel close to an airport limousine bus stop can save you a lot of stairs and transfers. Many central hotels list the nearest bus stop on their own website.
5. Read the most recent reviews first
Sort reviews by newest and look for comments about noise, construction or cleanliness from the last few months. Older praise may describe a building that has changed.
6. Read the room type name carefully
Some guesthouses list "ondol" rooms, where you sleep on a mattress on a heated floor instead of a bed. Many people love it, but book it on purpose. Also check whether a "double" means one bed, and whether the bathroom is private.
7. Breakfast: included or not?
Compare the breakfast-included rate with the price of a cafe or convenience-store breakfast nearby. In busy areas like Myeongdong and Hongdae, good options are usually a few minutes away.
8. Pay in Korean won
If the payment page or card terminal offers to charge you in your home currency, choosing won is usually cheaper. The "home currency" option uses the merchant's exchange rate, which typically includes a markup.
Which area should you stay in?
| Area | Good for | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Myeongdong | First-timers, shopping, airport bus links | Crowded and touristy in the evening |
| Hongdae | Nightlife, young crowd, AREX airport train | Can be noisy late on weekends |
| Jongno / Insadong | Palaces, traditional streets, central subway lines | Quieter at night |
| Gangnam | Business trips, newer hotels, K-beauty clinics | Longer rides to the old city |
| Seongsu | Cafes, pop-up stores, local feel | Fewer hotels, book early |
Before you go
Book a data plan before you land so maps and translation apps work from the airport. See the best time to visit Korea if you are still choosing dates.
